This was a small housing project in London's East
End for a local developer. The site, which was just
large enough for a pair of semi detached houses but
irregularly shaped, was very difficult to develop.
Due to the proximity of many of the adjoining
properties, an acceptable level of privacy for the new
dwellings could only be achieved by ensuring that all
rooms except the living rooms faced out over the
adjoining streets.
Windows to the staircase, situated at the rear, were
set at high level to provide light without permitting
views in or out of the building.
A similar device has been employed at ground level
on the street frontage where secondary windows to
the living rooms and kitchens are raised above eye
level.
